Protect backwater valves!

Many homeowners are unaware that they can, and indeed must, protect themselves effectively against backwater. Drainage systems that are below the backflow level must be permanently protected against backwater. Wastewater with a free fall must be protected by a backwater valve. Local authorities and insurance companies require this form of protection. Anyone who does not comply with these requirements is liable for any damage caused. Backwater valves therefore provide protection in two ways, because what use is an insurance policy that does not pay out in the event of damage due to a lack of precautions?

Reasons for backlogs can be:

• Due to heavy rain
• Due to constipation
• Burst pipes or sewer damage
• Due to pump failure
• Due to flooding in the receiving water
• By diverting or closing off the canal due to repair work
• Due to increased wastewater inflow, for example during sewer flushing, fire department operations or additional connections to the sewer network that were not originally intended

Backflow protection

In many cases, the damage has already occurred and the basement is flooded. Is my building sufficiently protected against backwater from the sewer?

We can provide advice and help here. It is often possible to retrofit backflow protection for a building or parts of a building after carefully checking the building's drainage system. Technical standards such as EN 12056 or EN 752 as well as EN DIN 1986 for building and property drainage systems provide technical guidelines on how a drainage system should be constructed. The separation of rainwater and wastewater in the property drainage system or the backflow-free discharge (if a permit has been granted) of drainage water are requirements that must be met by a functioning system. The tightness of the sewers is also stipulated in the laws and leaking wastewater from leaking sewers should not endanger the groundwater.

Backflow protection during rainfall

A recurring problem, especially in spring - backwater in the sewers and the subsequent flooding of the cellar. Backwater means that the city sewer is flooded by heavy rainfall and a backwater forms in the connected sewers of the homeowners.

To prevent this, KESSEL offers backwater valves, which are used at central junctions of faecal-free wastewater pipes. The backwater valve prevents water from the city sewer area, as well as vermin and rats, from entering the domestic sewage system. Backwater valves allow wastewater to flow unhindered from the house towards the city sewer, but block the return path. If a backflow occurs, they close automatically and release the drain again as soon as the situation has returned to normal after rain showers.
